What are facial thread veins and rosacea?
Rosacea is a relapsing skin condition mainly affecting the face and is more common in women and people with lighter skin. Symptoms include red ‘blushing’ patches that come and go most commonly across your nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin. As it worsens broken blood vessels, also known as thread veins, may appear and not go away. Other symptoms can include small pink/red bumps that can become ‘pus’ like, yellowy/orange patches, thickened skin around the nose, swelling around the eyes and sore eyelids.
Facial thread veins, also known as spider veins and broken red veins, are unsightly red, purple or blue veins on the face that usually occur across the nose, cheeks and chin areas.
Thread veins are caused by skin blood vessels that become permanently enlarged and therefore visible. This is usually due to rosacea or sun-damage.
IPL – an effective rosacea and facial thread vein removal treatment
Many of the symptoms of rosacea and facial red veins can be controlled using IPL. IPL is a non-invasive treatment that quickly and effectively removes the redness caused by rosacea and thread veins on your face. IPL thread vein and red vein removal treatment will remove fine and large thread veins approximately 1-3 mm in size.
It works by directing an intense beam of light directly at the thread veins, where it is absorbed by the blood vessels, causing the blood inside them to dry and harden and the veins to collapse and disappear. The dried-out blood vessels are then reabsorbed naturally by the body, leaving little or no trace of the red skin lesion.
Most red facial skin lesions, including rosacea, thread veins, spider naevi, and port wine stains, can be treated very successfully using IPL.
IPL also stimulates your skins collagen production, resulting in the improvement of overall skin texture. It not only helps to reduce the redness, but it also strengthens your skin making it more tolerant and less reactive, which is very beneficial as rosacea-prone skin is usually highly sensitive. IPL also helps to alleviate other symptoms including any small pink/red and ‘pus’ like bumps.
How long does IPL rosacea and thread vein removal take?
Typically, we recommend between 3 to 5 treatments, at 4-to-6-week intervals, for optimum results, dependent on your individual needs. However, small lesions may clear after just a single session.
Treatments usually take between 15 – 45 minutes and come with minimal downtime or risk. No anaesthetic is required and most people describe the treatment as mildly uncomfortable with the area sometimes feeling warm for a few hours afterwards.
Rarely, some more delicate skin areas can be red and slightly swollen for up to 48 hours. There is also a small chance a temporary blister may form and there could be temporary lightening or darkening of the skin.

Since the vein is completely closed, blood cannot re-enter it, as a result the vein disintegrates and is absorbed by the body.
As mentioned above you will probably need multiple treatments, but with each session you will see a permanent difference.
